Detroit Metro Airport Willow Run Airport Business

Emergency and Support Services (ESS)

We’re committed to ensuring the safety of everyone who travels through or works at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

The Emergency and Support Services team ensures passenger and employee safety while maintaining compliance with federal regulations and the Airport Security Program (ASP). Central to this effort is the Electronic Security System (ESS), which monitors and controls access to sensitive areas across terminals, perimeter buildings, 28 miles of fencing, fuel farms, power plants and roadways. Handling over 48,000 access requests daily, the ESS also supports TSA checkpoints and baggage systems. The ASP outlines procedures for compliance, and TSA regularly tests adherence, with penalties for failures.

To maintain security standards, the Airport Authority provides comprehensive training, annual refreshers and a Security Handbook to all badged employees. The Credentials Office manages ID badges, background checks, audits, and vehicle passes. Security Compliance staff conducts inspections, investigates violations and oversees security contracts. The Security Systems Manager ensures ESS and CCTV systems remain operational, manages maintenance contracts and enforces compliance for new installations and construction projects.
