Detroit Metro Airport Willow Run Airport Business

Noise

The Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) is committed to making DTW a world-class airport while considering the quality of life for nearby residents. Aircraft noise is a major concern, and the Airport Authority addresses it through the Noise Compatibility Program (NCP) to be a good neighbor to surrounding communities.

Supporting Our Communities: Noise Mitigation at DTW

The Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) is committed to making Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) a world-class facility for our airlines and the millions of people who use DTW each year. While DTW generates more than 86,000 jobs and more than $10.2 billion in total economic impact across Michigan, the Airport Authority considers quality of life for residents who live near the Airport as well.

One of the most significant and challenging issues facing airports today is the effect of aircraft noise on surrounding communities. To address this issue, the Airport Authority has developed a Noise Compatibility Plan (NCP) which identifies and addresses such concerns. It is our goal to be a good neighbor to our local communities.

More information regarding the study may be found in the following documentation:

Willow Run Overview

The goal of the Study is to work in conjunction with surrounding communities, aviation experts and airport neighbors to establish a balanced, cost effective, and comprehensive Noise Compatibility Plan for the airport and surrounding communities.

Noise Compatibility

The Noise Compatibility Program (NCP) at DTW combines the existing approved Part 150 Noise Compatibility Plan with Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) requirements to ensure the safe and expeditious handling of air traffic. While safety is paramount to any ATC operation, noise sensitivity to the surrounding communities is also of key importance in airport operations.

Residential Sound Insulation Program (RSIP)

As part of the 1992 Part 150 Noise Study, WCAA’s RSIP provided eligible homes and schools near DTW with sound insulation to reduce aircraft noise. Over 2,400 homes and seven schools received improvements, and 265 homes were acquired. The program concluded in 2006.
