Airport Authority Police Department invites public comment as part of reaccreditation process

News Releases

DETROIT (Sept. 4, 2025) – The Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) is seeking public input regarding law enforcement at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and Willow Run Airport as part of its upcoming reaccreditation process.

The WCAA Police Department will undergo an on-site assessment Sept. 8-10, 2025, as part of its voluntary participation in the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEAÒ) program. This nationally recognized accreditation process verifies that law enforcement agencies meet professional standards of excellence.

The WCAA PD first earned the accreditation in 2008 and has successfully maintained it through reaccreditations in 2011, 2014, 2017 and 2021. To achieve reaccreditation, the department must demonstrate compliance with more than 480 professional standards across four key areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.

As part of the review, a CALEAÒ assessor will review compliance with accreditation standards, examine the agency’s operations, and interview community stakeholders.

Community and agency members are invited to provide feedback on the department’s compliance with CALEAÒ standards prior to the on-site assessment. Comments may be submitted in the following ways:

  • Online: Via the Accreditation Public Comment Portal
  • By mail: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc.

    13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320

    Gainesville, VA 20155

  • By phone: 703-352-4225
  • By email: calea@calea.org (include “Wayne County Airport Authority Police Department” in the subject line)

Comments should specifically address the department’s ability to comply with CALEAÒ standards. A copy of the standards is available for public review at the Wayne County Airport Authority Police Department, 31399 East Service Drive, Detroit, MI 48242.

CALEAÒ accreditation signifies that the Wayne County Airport Authority Police Department ranks among the top-performing law enforcement agencies worldwide.
